FAQs
Q: Is it better to leave my AC on or off when I’m not home?
A: It depends on your house. Older homes with less insulation would typically allow your house to get too hot if you left it off (over 85°F). The AC would run too long at an inefficient pace and cost you more in electricity costs than if you left it on. Find a happy medium in your house. We recommend setting your thermostat at 85°F when you're not home and 78°F when you are. When you get home and turn your AC on and it runs a few hours non-stop, you let your house get too hot!
Q: How cold can I set my thermostat in the summer?
A: The industry standard for residential indoor design is 75°F. As the outdoor temperature rises above 95°F, your AC starts to lose capacity, meaning it will not cool as well when it was 95°F and lower. On days 100°F and over, we recommend a thermostat setting of 78°F to 80°F.
Q: How often should I change my filter?
A: Standard filters are good for 30 days. Pleated filters are good for up to 90 days, but during heavy usage or in high dust areas, 30 days is recommended.
Q: What temperature settings do you recommend for my thermostat?
A: We recommend 78°F - 80°F for cooling and 68°F - 72°F for heat.
Q: Why do my temperature settings jump around on my thermostat?
A: Your thermostat is probably in the program mode. If you want a manual setting (no program), push your program button.
Q: Why is my fan running non-stop?
A: More than likely your thermostat’s fan switch is in the 'on' position. Switch it to 'auto' and it will only come on with the AC and heating system. If the fan keeps running, call for service.
Q: We had a power outage and now our AC is blowing hot air or it’s doing nothing at all.
A: During a “brown out” or outage, your unit / compressor can overheat and shut down on an internal overload or trip the electrical breaker. Turn your thermostat off and let your AC unit cool down for at least ½ hour or up to 1 hour. In some cases, you will need to reset your electrical breaker if it tripped. Flip the breaker to the 'off' position and then flip it on.
Q: How do I know if SCE has cycled my AC off?
A: Your SCE curtailment box will be flashing a green light when you are being cycled off. A steady green light is normal operation. Second, you can go online with SCE and look up your grid number to check.
